 Immanuel Korean Church
– our LPD “Church” of the Week.
Thanks to Anna (Ben) Crumback at Sointula Community Church for producing the Church of the Week!

Dear friends,

Good Friday morning!
So, if you were a visitor to your church, would you come back?

It may sound like a simple – or even dumb question, but why would you come back?

The music might be something that a visitor can relate to. The sermon might be biblical and sound. The building might be tidy and neat. The coffee might even be Starbucks – or Tim Horton’s, if you prefer. But, why would one come back? What is a person looking for?

When I studied the Sociology of Religion in university, one of our assignments was to visit two churches, and to report on what we observed. As I was the only believer in the class, this was a great opportunity for me to learn. It was insightful. Some churches scared people! They were cornered and confronted with their apparent need to be slain in the Spirit. Others were ignored. What impressed people, were churches that were genuine and sincere in their interest in others – both visitors and “regulars,” and that they engaged and participated in the singing, sermons and other elements of the service.

I have been to churches where I have felt as an “outsider.” While the mission might be to reach out, the focus has seemed to be very inward. I have also been to churches where I would love to attend, where God is very evidently at work and I have been warmly welcomed. What’s the difference?
Here’s some food for thought in an article by Gavin Adams, “How to Make a Guest’s First Sunday Count”        volunteers-guest-services-sunday
